Dog Constantly Licking Paws: What's Behind It

Occasional paw licking is grooming. Constant licking – leading to brown discoloration or bald spots – is a signal.

The Most Common Causes

  • Allergies: Food or environmental (grasses, mites) – the most common cause of chronic licking.
  • Foreign object/injury: Foxtails, cracks, interdigital inflammation – examine thoroughly.
  • Road salt in winter: burns and is licked off – rinse after walks.
  • Boredom/stress: Licking soothes – becomes a habit like nail-biting.

What You Can Do

  1. Check the paw: between the toes, pads, nail bed.
  2. If it persists for days or the skin changes → vet (allergy workup).
  3. For boredom-related licking: more mental stimulation – a well-occupied dog licks less.

The weekly paw routine is in the Grooming Guide, and activity ideas are in "No More Boredom".
