Second Dog: The Pre-Check and Proper Integration
A second dog – double the joy or double the chaos? Both are possible. What matters is whether your first dog is ready.
The honest check beforehand
- Is your first dog relaxed in everyday life – recall, leash, staying alone? Problem areas double, they don't resolve themselves.
- Does he have positive dog contacts or does he prefer to be alone?
- Do you have time for TWO? Every dog needs individual training – especially at the beginning.
The introduction
- Neutral ground: First meeting in an unfamiliar field, both on loose leashes, walking parallel instead of head-on.
- At home: Separate resources – two bowls, two beds, chew toys only when separated.
- The first dog keeps privileges: He is greeted first, fed first – this reduces competitive pressure.
- Individual time for both: Otherwise, the second dog only learns from the first dog – including his bad habits.
Realistic expectations
Acclimatisation takes weeks to months. Structure helps: You can find routines, rules and trackers for both dogs in the Everyday Toolkit.
