Getting a Dog Used to Water: Learning to Swim Without Force
Not every dog is a born swimmer—and no dog should be thrown into the water. This is how he learns it voluntarily and safely.
The gentle introduction
- Choose a shallow shore: gently sloping, calm water, warm weather.
- You go first: ankle-deep in, entice, praise—the dog decides the pace.
- Throw toy near the shore, not into deep water.
- First strokes: stay calm, don't hold on—panic arises from coercion.
Safety
- Short-nosed breeds and heavy dogs: life jacket.
- Avoid currents, algal blooms and cold water; shower with fresh water after bathing if in salt/chlorine.
- Don't swim on a full stomach; dry ears afterwards (risk of inflammation).
If he absolutely doesn't want to
Also okay—water is not a mandatory program. Paddling pools and water-seeking games are the summer alternative: ideas in "Never Bored Again".
