Cutting a Dog's Nails: Step-by-Step Without Drama

Claws that are too long are not just uncomfortable – they change the paw position and can put a strain on joints in the long term. If you hear clicking on the parquet floor, it's time.

First things first: the quick in the claw

A blood-supplied area ("the quick") runs through each claw. With light claws, you can see it shimmering pink – stay 2–3 mm away from it. With dark claws: shorten only millimeter by millimeter and pay attention to the cross-section – if it becomes moist-dark, stop immediately.

How to build it up stress-free

  1. Positively associate the tool: Show clippers, treat – for several days, without cutting.
  2. Practice paw handling: Hold paw, reward, release.
  3. One claw per session at the beginning – rather 10 short successes than a struggle.
  4. Quiet moment: after the walk, not in the middle of a game.

Emergency: too short after all?

Stay calm, press with a clean cloth, apply styptic powder (or cornstarch) – and end the session amicably.

The complete guide with pictures, also for dark claws, can be found in the Fellpflege & Grooming Guide.
