Scent Work for Dogs: A Beginner's Guide

The dog's nose is its strongest muscle — figuratively speaking: Up to 300 million olfactory cells want to be used. 10 minutes of searching is more strenuous than an hour of trotting.

Exercise 1: The Basic Search (Day 1)

Dog sits or is held, you visibly place a treat 3 meters away, release word ("Search!") — done. Sounds trivial, but it builds up the search signal.

Exercise 2: Hide Invisibly (Week 1)

Same game, but the treat is behind the chair leg, under the edge of the carpet, on the second shelf. Important: Only let him search when you are back with him — otherwise, he learns to look instead of sniffing.

Exercise 3: The Room Search (Week 2)

3–5 hiding places in a room, dog waits outside. You will see: The nose goes down, concentration goes up — this is the state that makes them tired.

Outside in the grass, searching for a specific toy, your "lost" key, tracks... nose work grows with the dog — from puppy to senior, also for dogs with joint problems.
