Why “No!” Doesn’t Work With Your Dog

"No!" is the most used word in everyday dog life - and usually the most useless. Not because boundaries are wrong, but because the word doesn't tell the dog what to do instead.

The Problem with "No"

"No" stops (at best) a behavior - for seconds. The dog then doesn't know what would have been right, so he tries the same thing again. And a "no" that falls a hundred times a day becomes noise.

The Alternative: Incompatible Behavior

Instead of forbidding, train the opposite:

• Jumps at visitors? → "Sit for greeting" - sitting and jumping can't happen at the same time.
• Barks at the window? → "To the blanket" - lying there and barking at the window can't happen at the same time.
• Pulls towards the sausage on the ground? → "Leave it" with a reward from the hand.

If "No," then correctly

There can be a stop signal - calmly built up, sparingly used, always followed by an alternative that is rewarded.
