How much sleep does a dog need? More than you think
Adult dogs sleep and rest 17–20 hours a day, puppies and seniors even more. Too little rest is one of the most overlooked causes of "problem behavior."
How to recognize sleep deprivation
- Over-excitement in the evening instead of tiredness
- Irritability, jumpiness, "fidgety" behavior
- Can't switch off, constantly follows you around
How your dog can get its rest
- Fixed resting place away from through traffic — and there it is never disturbed (not even by children).
- Rest rituals: after the walk, chew toys on the blanket — chewing initiates sleep.
- Don't constantly entertain: A dog doesn't need 8 hours of program — enduring boredom is a skill.
- Dose activity: short and focused exertion, then a conscious break.
The balance of activity and rest — with a weekly schedule — can be found in "Never Bored Again".
