Dog Won't Eat: Harmless or a Sign of Trouble?

The bowl remains full – and the concern grows. Before you panic: Most cases of "dog not eating" have harmless causes. But some don't.

First: The Warning Signs Checklist

Go to the vet immediately if any of these occur in addition: vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy, bloated abdomen, fever, signs of pain, puppy not eating for >24 h, adult dog not eating for >48 h.

Common Harmless Causes

• Too many incidental calories: If the dog gets treats throughout the day, it simply won't be hungry in the evening.
• Heat: On warm days, appetite decreases – normal.
• Trained to be picky: If the scorned bowl is replaced with something tastier, the dog learns: waiting pays off.
• Stress or change: Moving, a new pet, a female in heat in the neighborhood.
• Toothache: eats soft food, leaves hard food → check teeth.

The 15-Minute Trick

Place the bowl, leave it for 15 minutes, put it away without comment – next meal at the usual time. No alternatives, no coaxing. In healthy dogs, appetite usually regulates itself within 1–2 days.
