Getting a Dog Used to Water: Learning to Swim Without Force

Not every dog is a born swimmer—and no dog should be thrown into the water. This is how he learns it voluntarily and safely.

The gentle introduction

  1. Choose a shallow shore: gently sloping, calm water, warm weather.
  2. You go first: ankle-deep in, entice, praise—the dog decides the pace.
  3. Throw toy near the shore, not into deep water.
  4. First strokes: stay calm, don't hold on—panic arises from coercion.

Safety

  • Short-nosed breeds and heavy dogs: life jacket.
  • Avoid currents, algal blooms and cold water; shower with fresh water after bathing if in salt/chlorine.
  • Don't swim on a full stomach; dry ears afterwards (risk of inflammation).

If he absolutely doesn't want to

Also okay—water is not a mandatory program. Paddling pools and water-seeking games are the summer alternative: ideas in "Never Bored Again".
