Recall Training with a Long Leash: The Guide

The classic training pitfall: at home, recall works perfectly, but in the field, the dog is gone. The long leash (5–10 m) closes exactly this gap — the dog feels free, you retain control.

Safety first

  • Attach only to the harness — never to the collar (risk of injury with jerks).
  • Let the leash trail or hold it loosely — never wrap it around your hand.
  • Gloves for large dogs.

The setup in 4 stages

  1. Low-distraction meadow: dog sniffs, you call once — if he comes, he gets the jackpot (super treat + allowed to continue walking).
  2. If he doesn't come: don't call again — calmly go to the leash, gently reel him in, reward him kindly. The signal is never devalued.
  3. Increase distraction: other dogs in sight, joggers, scent of wild animals — step by step.
  4. Shorten the leash: 10 m → 5 m → trailing → off. Each stage only when the previous one is 90% solid.

The most common mistake

Taking the leash off too early. A single successful "escape moment" sets you back weeks. The basis for this — name reaction and recall training day by day — is provided by "Hört aufs Wort".
