Dental care for dogs: How to really make brushing teeth work
Tartar, bad breath, gingivitis - dental problems are among the most common diagnoses at the vet. However, prevention is easy if you start early.
The gold standard: brushing teeth
Yes, really. 2-3 times a week with dog toothpaste (never human toothpaste - fluoride and xylitol are toxic to dogs). Acclimatization in stages: first let them lick the paste, then finger with paste to the teeth, then finger cot, then brush. Each stage for a few days.
What else helps
- Chewing: suitable chew articles act like a toothbrush - size appropriate for the dog.
- Dry abrasion food does not replace brushing, but helps slightly.
- Control: 1x per week lift lips - red edges, brown plaque or strong odor belong to the vet.
What doesn't help
Miracle cures in drinking water and "self-cleaning" snacks with added sugar - reading the ingredient list is also worthwhile here.
You can find the complete weekly routine for ears, eyes and teeth in the Grooming Guide.
