Dog barks at the doorbell: Reprogramming it
The doorbell rings – and your dog explodes. Doorbell barking is one of the most common everyday problems, and it gets reinforced with every ring.
Why it's so persistent
From a dog's perspective, barking works perfectly: the doorbell rings, he barks, you go to the door, something exciting happens. The pattern reinforces itself – a hundred times a year.
The training plan
- Decouple the doorbell: Doorbell sound (recording or helper) at a low volume → treat on the dog bed. Dozens of times, over several days.
- New program: From now on, ringing means "go to the dog bed, where rewards will rain down" – the dog bed is placed facing the door, but at a distance.
- Real test with a helper: Ring the doorbell, lead the dog to the dog bed, visitor only enters once there is calm.
- Consistency: Every real doorbell ring is now training – even if it's the package delivery person.
The dog bed training as a foundation is included in the Everyday Toolkit, and building calmness in "Listens to Every Word".
